Cancellation of 2020 Davidson County Fair
Cancellation of 2020 Davidson County Fair
September 21 - 26, 2020
The Lexington Kiwanis Club regrets to announce that the 74th annual Davidson County Agricultural Fair scheduled for September 21 - 26, 2020 will be cancelled.  The Club has labored over this decision, but the deciding factors are related to the ongoing COVID 19 situation and the restrictions that have been imposed to keep citizens and patrons safe.

The Club feels that canceling the September 2020 fair is in the best interest of the residents of Davidson County for their health and safety.  The decision is made with an abundance of caution by our Club Officers, our Board of Directors and our Fair Committee.  In making this decision, the Club did an extensive review of the current pandemic situation and the operating procedures of the fair. The review included consideration of the current historical data and latest opinions from state and local governing officials including medical experts and health agencies.  We wanted to have the best information possible to make a good decision for the safety and security of fair patrons.

The county continues to see COVID 19 cases on the rise (now over 500 cases).  It is projected that large gatherings will still be limited through the summer and into the fall, and there is a strong possibility of a second wave of cases.  Social distancing protocols, sanitizing procedures, and the recommendation for wearing face masks will still be in place.  Such measures will make it extremely difficult for the operation of the fair with large numbers of people in attendance over a six day period that the event normally is held.

Our ride and amusement vendor would have to take extraordinary measures to insure the safety of participants that could cause delays and/or limited availability of rides and entertainment.  Our food and concession vendors essentially are non-profit groups that are not equipped to abide by the restrictions set forth by Health Department officials.   Our agricultural barns and show areas are not situated to provide for social distancing protocols. Sanitizing these areas would be extremely difficult. In the Exhibit Hall,  agricultural and other exhibits would possibly be limited such that they could not be displayed properly and/or viewed by visiting fair goers.

Some of our special events such as Senior Day, the County Beauty Pageant and the Diaper Derby could not be held due to social distancing protocols and the high risk infection concerns.

The Davidson County Agricultural Fair has a high standard of providing an exceptional county fair in the safest and most secure environment possible.  Even though this is our primary fundraiser for Kamp Kiwanis and other non-profit groups also depend on the fair for fund raising, we strongly believe that the health and well-being of our county residents is paramount!  This year's Kamp Kiwanis for underprivileged children has also been cancelled due to safety concerns related to the virus.

This is the only time in the 74 year history of the fair that we have cancelled.  We have lost days due to weather events, but have never been forced to cancel the entire week.  While we all want to experience the thrill and fun of our annual county fair, it would not only put people at risk for the virus, but with so many people struggling financially, we do not want to add to this burden.

The Lexington Kiwanis Club desperately wanted a fair this year.  We have found that it is not the best thing for the overall health of our community at this time.  It also is not good to hold such an event when there are so many people with employment issues and having to deal with a struggling economy.

With this in mind, the Lexington Kiwanis Club is already looking ahead to better times in 2021.  We are hoping to have a bigger and better fair for county residents in the fall of 2021 as our Club will be celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Davidson County Agricultural Fair.  We hope and pray that conditions will continue to improve to allow for events such as our fair and other entertainment venues to resume activities.
